Synaptics Announces Patent Granted for ChiralMotion® Gesture Technology

Synaptics continues to drive innovation for human interface technology with strong IP portfolio

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – February 16, 2009 - Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNA), a leading developer of human interface solutions for mobile computing, communications, and entertainment devices, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent (U.S. Patent 7,446,754), which protects its widely acclaimed ChiralMotion gesture technology.

Synaptics ChiralMotion gesture technology is well-suited for devices such as notebooks, feature-rich mobile handsets, personal navigation systems, and personal media players that require easy control over entertainment, music, and other digital files. For example, ChiralMotion on a TouchPad® interface makes scrolling through long documents or webpages on a notebook PC simple. To reverse the direction of controls such as scrolling or zooming, users would only need to reverse the circular motion of their finger.

“This milestone is another indicator of Synaptics continued innovation and strong IP portfolio that spans far beyond the notebook PC,” says Tom Tiernan, Synaptics president and COO. “As users grow to expect more interaction and capabilities from their devices, Synaptics is ready with a range of flexible, innovative human interface solutions designed specifically for users.”

“The adoption of gesture technology by many of the world’s most innovative and fast-paced OEMs is another example of how they continue to drive us to deliver industry-leading solutions as a standard offering in our solution stack," said Gopal Garg, senior vice president of handheld business and corporate marketing for Synaptics. "The ongoing innovation by our company is a direct result of our customers' requests for advanced technology that will improve the user interface, provide differentiation for their products, and offer compelling next-generation features and functionality.”
